Catalonia clamps down on 'booze and babes' tourism

...ba href=/sleep/a/b without double glazing; and that their streets were filthy with rubbish and body fluids.

Doctors found the cost of treating youngsters who fell into comas after three-day drinking binges far outstripped the sums they spent during their visits.

The authorities, who have long encouraged down-market mass tourism with low prices and a tolerant attitude, have finally had enough.

The Barcelona town hall, and the Catalan regional government, have drawn up a battery of measures to stamp out anti-social - what they call "uncivil" - behaviour.

First targets are the countless unofficial websites for cheap Catalan resorts that promise booze, wild street parties, "cool chicks, beach frolics and fun", to those who get themselves on a flight from, say, Liverpool to Gerona for €10 (£6.90) or from Cologne to Barcelona for €1.

"We can't allow our region to turn into a human rubbish tip for everyone not wanted by other European countries," Xavier Guitart, of the region's tourism ministry, complained.

"We are not prepared to prostitute our region for €4." The Catalan government is to crack down on dozens of websites containing "illegal" ads.

The region's interior minister, Montserrat Tura, knows it will be difficult to act against foreign advertisers, often private individuals seeking to organise group visits on the cheap.

Her solution - to ask Europol for help in fighting unscrupulous online party- organisers - seems already to have had an effect.

Many such sites have suddenly gone blank....

Fresh day on Twofold Bay

...ba href=/sleep/a/b well on Sunday nights after such races in the fresh stuff.

When Mac Shimeld's Ruby blew the clew out of the headsail on the first work, the crew responded first making repairs to the sail only for it to blow again a short time after.

A headsail change and alterations to the rig configuration saw Mac and his crew recover gallantly.

Doug and Anne Comery and Jeanette Shimeld handled the boat magnificently to get back in the race after trailing the fleet around Boydtown just in front of Old Gold.

Once Ruby regained competitiveness you could have thrown a blanket over the fleet for the whole race.

Glenda Wood's Northshore 38, Shore Enuff with crew Bob Bedwell and newcomer Ronja Mothes masterfully handling the big boat in the conditions kept the other big boats honest - in the end trailing Chris Hopkins' Old Habits across the line by just five seconds.

Chris and his crew Brian Chadwick and Trevor Godwin had Old Habits fighting all the way trying to gain the ascendancy flying their spinnaker on the run to Calle Calle.

As I said earlier John Joensen and Alan Greening weren't giving an inch to the bigger boats.

It must have been the new headsail that gave the guys such confidence for they fairly pushed the little Endeavour hard all the way round the course to save their time and take out handicap honours.

Not even the presence of John Moulton on Old Gold could get the little boat going.

Flying the spinnaker on the leg to Calle Calle seemed like a good...

Muslim clerics order couple to divorce after pillow talk

...ba href=/sleep/a/b.

Sohela Ansari told friends that her husband Aftab had said the word talaq three times in his ba href=/sleep/a/b.

Under Muslim law, a man can divorce his wife by saying talaq three times.

The issue ended up before local religious leaders.

"Muslim clerics issued a fatwa (religious decree) asking the couple to live separately immediately after the news reached the local mosque," a police official said yesterday.

However, the couple, who are now legally divorced, insist they are still in love and don't want to live apart.

They have been married for 11 years and live with their three children in a village 600km north of Kolkata, capital of West Bengal state.

The police learnt of the matter when the couple went to a family counselling centre at a police station to seek help last week.

Clerics have ordered the woman to marry another man during Muslim law's mandated 103-day separation period.

Once her second husband divorces her, she can then remarry her first husband.
