It is estimated that about 50 per cent of beef cattle in Australian herds are horned and that damage caused by horns costs the beef industry upwards of $22 million annually.

"Polled cattle offer many benefits to farmers, including safety, cost-savings, easier herd management and fewer animal welfare implications," said Tom Watson, general manager business development, Livestock Genetic Testing.

"Breeders and scientists have been working toward solving the horn problem for some time, but unravelling the genetics of horn development has proven extremely complex."
