(File photo) Brandon School Division officials will move to make next year’s budget discussions less open to the public, saying this year’s debate over job cuts was too stressful on staff.

“It hurt employee morale,” superintendent Donna Michaels said yesterday.

“It’s been really, really hard on those people whose jobs have been on the line.” This year’s budget discussion was unusually public, Michaels said.

A list of proposed job cuts was made available for everyone to see, and trustees openly debated individual jobs at their meetings.

That resulted in a major outcry from teachers, parents and other people who didn’t want to see certain jobs lost or programs reduced.

- The farmers' market program in North Dakota is currently in its basic stages, but according to Vance Corum, the farmers' market concept is growing rapidly and offers an opportunity for agricultural growth in the state.Corum, who has helped communities establish farmers' markets since 1979, was the keynote speaker at the annual N.D.

Farmer's Market Conference, which was held March 15-16 in Fargo.

According to N.D.

Department of Agriculture figures, there are currently 50 farmers' markets in the state, and 60 people, representing about half of those markets, attended the conference.

According to Corum, there is great growth potential for farmers' markets, especially in areas close to the more urban settings.

The main intent for the current farmers' market growers is to create new areas of relationships with the consumers.“The farmers' market is definitely a niche market,” Corum said, “but it is a market that can respond to the desires of certain customer tastes and move fo...
