Pitt-Sponsored National Survey on Mental Health Of American College Students Released This Week
9 percent of all students sought counseling; number of students with severe psychological problems continues to grow
PITTSBURGH-More than 90 percent of the directors of college counseling centers in the United States and Canada report an increase in the number of students seeking psychiatric or psychological help for severe problems on campus.The annual survey of counseling center directors, conducted for the 25th time by University of Pittsburgh retired vice chancellor for student affairs, Robert Gallagher, was released this week and can be accessed at www.iacsinc.org, the Web site of the survey's publisher, the International Association of Counseling Services. It includes data from 366 campus counseling centers.Among the survey findings:o Nine percent of all students sought counseling in 2005.o Some 90.3 percent of directors report an increase in the number of students coming to counseling centers with severe psychological problems, compared to 85 percent in 2004.o Directors report that 42.8 percent of their clients have severe psychological problems, including 8.5 percent with impairments so serious that they cannot remain in school.
