TORONTO (CP) - Priszm Canadian Income Fund (TSX:QSR.UN), proprietor of 479 KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Long John Silver's restaurants in seven provinces, is promising a turnaround after a 30 per cent decline in 2005 profit.

"Quite frankly, we tried to achieve too much change too quickly," chairman and CEO John Bitove explained Wednesday, stressing that first-quarter results are stronger and the fund's distributions are safe.

Priszm reported annual revenue of $484.5 million, up a slim 2.2 per cent from $474 million in 2004.

Earnings were $12.4 million, 60 cents per unit, compared with 2004 net income of $17.8 million, 86 cents per unit.

"People chew gum primarily because it's a pleasurable experience, to deliver mouth-freshening" and for oral health care benefits, said Gilbert Leveille, executive director of the Wrigley Science Institute, which held its inaugural meeting in Chicago in December.

Gums it classifies as oral-care related now account for 40 percent of its $3.6 billion in worldwide sales.

But with consumers bombarded by companies' claims of health benefits in their products, food analyst Bob Goldin wonders if the gum maker isn't overdoing it this time.

Increasingly, he says, the public sees such efforts as self-serving.
