Patients may be referred by a physician.

But you don't have to wait for a referral.

Generally rehab starts two to three weeks after the heart's injury, but rehab can also benefit patients with older injuries as well.

Photo contributed Mike Regner is both a registered nurse and a respiratory therapist who works part time with the Mountain Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation program.

Each newly diagnosed or beginner patient has a pre-program assessment which includes a "walk test" and a history and physical assessment.

Staff members design rehab programs around each patient's baseline ability and personal goals.

Patients are shown how to use each piece of equipment.

Heart monitoring electrodes are placed on a patient's chest, allowing a specialized wireless transmitter to send a tracing of his or her heart's rhythm to a monitor.

The highly trained rehab staff regularly monitors their exercising client's blood pressure, heart rate and rhythms.

Monthly reports are sent to referring physicians showing the patient's rhythm during exercise and "cool down" periods.

After a patient completes the three month rehabilitation program, a post-program assessment is done to see how patients have met their individual goals.

This information is then entered into a computer database and compared to other cardiac rehab programs nationally for performance improvement.

Eight Good Shepherd Hospice Volunteers complete training

...ba href=/stress management/a/b, psychosocial and spiritual issues of death and dying, patient rights, care and comfort of the patient, and bereavement.

The sessions were held at the Good Shepherd office in Hayesville.

Guest speakers participating in the training included: Teresa Heavner, MD volunteer Hospice medical director, Lynae Cheeks, Hospice RN coordinator, Arnaldo Lugo, Hospice chaplain, Linda May, MMC volunteer coordinator and seasoned volunteers, Betsy Lewis and Mabel Cook.

The diverse group of attendees included nursing assistants, seasoned volunteers and RNs.

Administration and staff culminated the five weeks of training on Thursday March 9, 2006 by awarding attendees with pins, certificates and a luncheon celebration.

" Good Shepherd is very fortunate to have an excellent group of volunteers who are willing to share their time and talents with hospice patients and families," states Towanna Roberts, Good Shepherd Manager.

Hospice volunteers render a variety of services to hospice patients and their families, including home visits, emotional support, running errands and lending a listening ear.

The primary goal of the hospice team is to enable the patient to spend his or her last days with a sense of dignity, pain free and at home with loved ones.
