Bedbugs are back and biting in Alabama
BIRMINGHAM (AP) — Bedbugs have been busy across the country and in Alabama, where industry officials say they've hit Huntsville and bugged guests at a Birmingham hotel and apartment complex in recent weeks. Mike Jones, region manager for Alabama for Orkin, said the pest control company has done seven bedbug treatments in the state so far this year, compared to five treatments in all of 2005. "If we stay on this same track, we'll do about 30 (treatments) this year," Jones said. He said the treatments so far have been in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile. Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association, said reports of bedbugs have jumped 63 percent from 2000 to 2005 in the United States. "There has been an increase in international travel, with people not only coming here, but us going overseas," Mannes said. "And bedbugs are great hitchhikers. Attending to a crying baby became everyone's concern because Breen was welcomed to bring her child to work after the first few months of infancy.
