Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States, 1.5 million people are diagnosed each year and, despite aggressive research efforts, there remains no cure in sight. Even with this high degree of visibility and vast scope, almost one- third of those affected by diabetes, or more than six million people, are not aware that they have the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that diabetes now affects 20.8 million Americans, a 14 percent increase from the numbers reported by the CDC in 2003. Herald Sports Writer Some players live for the challenge of a "mission impossible." Some coaches, too. Joe Fennell appears to be one of those guys. On April 3, when the Sparta High School boy's tennis team opens its Sussex County Interscholastic League season at Kittatinny, Fennell will be replacing a coaching legend. For the first time since 1977, Jeff Hughes won't be writing out the lineup card for the Spartans. That task will fall to Fennell, a 26 year-old former Pope John player who was handpicked by Hughes to be his successor. A four-year varsity starter, No. 1 singles player and team captain at Fairfield University, Fennell is no stranger to performing under pressure. But taking the place of Hughes, whom Wallkill Valley coach Bob Loguidice called "the best coach ever in the league," is certainly a daunting job, especially for someone coaching his first team. Four hundred and 29 wins and 17 won-or-shared SCIL titles over 28 years would cast a huge shadow over any coach. "I guess it's only natural to feel a little pressure," Fennell said. "Jeff set such a high standard to try and live up to, but we have enough talent here to continue to do very well, if we combine the talent with hard work.
