Campaign battles suicide...ba href=/stress management/a/b and protective services hot line and referral service.The 10th-leading cause of death in the United States, suicide took the lives of 30,622 Americans in 2001; 1,096 people in Michigan killed themselves last year, according to federal and state statistics.Too often, survivors blame themselves for having missed the signs a loved one was considering suicide, but they aren't always clear, Larch said.Unfortunately, "nobody sees it coming," she said.The Macomb County Crisis Center started in 2001 and has trained dozens of school, church and community leaders in suicide prevention, provided speakers and resources for hundreds of schools and led to the creation of several student-produced videos on suicide topics.The campaign stresses that depression is a common symptom among young people who are contemplating suicide. Two separate crashes claimed the lives of two men Sunday, one of them a reserve officer and volunteer fire fighter from Hebron. According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, Joshua Olenik, 24, was riding his 2001 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Indiana 8 at about noon Sunday when he lost control. The motorcycle left the roadway, traveled about 100 feet through grass before striking a tree about 15 to 20 feet from the road. Officers from the Hebron Police and Fire Department, and Porter County EMS responded to the scene. Alcohol was not thought to be a contributing factor. Olenik, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Porter County Coroner’s Office. According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, the Porter County Critical ba href=/stress management/a/b team was contacted to conduct a debriefing session for the many public safety personnel who were acquainted with Olenik. The Lake County Coroner’s office also reported the death of Ryan Hanner of Steger, Ill.
