As this area grows there is a lot of discussion about how to make managers more understanding of the local work force. A new concept that is attracting the attention of managers and academia is leading through emotional intelligence. Made famous by Daniel Goleman, founder of Emotional Intelligence Services and a former writer for The New York Times, this theory is gaining credibility as a solution to leadership issues. Emotional intelligence deals with your ability to understand yourself and management's ability to understand the emotional state of employees. This knowledge leads to positive relationships, understanding of issues, better diversity and improved team building. Goleman defines emotional intelligence as "the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for monitoring ourselves and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships." The top U.S. military commander here Monday stressed the need for special consideration to be given to safety in the ongoing joint training exercises with South Korean forces on the Korean Peninsula. In a weekly online message, Gen. B. B. Bell, chief of the United States Forces Korea (USFK), called on his generals and personnel to ``train and exercise safely¡¯¡¯ during the biggest joint combined exercise on the peninsula, a USFK spokesman said. ``The exercise presents a great opportunity for our entire USFK team to assess our mission-essential tasks and operating procedures,¡¯¡¯ Bell said, asking commanders and first-line leaders to train soldiers to use proper risk-management procedures for soldiers. ``To exercise safely, we have to defeat complacency, overconfidence, and indeed fatigue,¡¯¡¯ he added. Bell also serves as commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC) and the United Nations Command (UNC). ROK refers to the Republic of Korea, South Korea¡¯s official name. Two annual exercises _ RSOI (Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration) and Foal Eagle _ began last Saturday with about 25,000 U.S. troops, including 3,000 from off-peninsula, participating. An unspecified number of South Korean soldiers are joining in the exercises that will continue through Friday.
