Farmers address tornado damage
The real total impact of the March 12-13 tornadoes on area producers and farms may not be known for several months.There are, however, concerns that should be addressed quickly according to Eldon Cole, a University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist based in Lawrence County.For example, following the tornadoes, some livestock wandered away because of downed fences."This is an example where branding of cattle and horses or at least personalized ear tags would have been helpful," Cole said. Another consideration for producers is the loss of trees in pastures, which means less shade and more heat stress on cattle."Portable shades might prove worthwhile. Stocker cattle at the Southwest Research Center gained more when given shade during the summer. Breeding females also maintained a higher percentage of pregnancies when given shade... Now back in civilian life and living in Blue Island, Summerfield, like thousands of other veterans returning home after serving in Iraq, is finding it tough to get a job despite her military experience.
